The greenest of the Ionian islands, and the one the Ottomans never took — its Venetian old town shielded by two vast sea fortresses through siege after siege. Cypress hills running down to the water, pebble beaches and beach-bar tavernas, a UNESCO old town of shuttered lanes, and Albania close enough to boat over for the day. Lush, Italian-tinged, and easy.
